Which Portugal plan do I need?

Rough guide only: many travellers use 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. Video, video calls and hotspot use much more.

Networks and coverage in Portugal

Your eSIM can connect to NOS (5G), Vodafone (5G). Your phone uses whichever it finds. 5G where there's 5G coverage and your phone supports it. Otherwise 4G.

Real speed depends on the local network, how busy it is and your signal. Why 5G or 4G

How to set up your Portugal eSIM before you fly

  1. Check your phone. It needs eSIM and no carrier lock. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phone check
  2. Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Any time up to 180 days before. Your days don't start until it first connects in Portugal.
  3. When you land, switch the kimsim line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. You won't be charged roaming: kimsim is prepaid. Keep roaming off on your home line.
  4. Make kimsim your mobile data line. Your home number stays on for calls and texts.

Good to know: Portugal

Portugal reaches from Lisbon and Porto down to the Algarve and out into the Atlantic, and a Portugal plan covers Madeira and the Azores too, because both are Portugal. The catch is the open land border with Spain: Spanish networks reach across it, and a Portugal plan stops working the moment your phone switches to one.

What a week of data costs in Portugal

Prices for 7 days of data, checked on 3 November 2026. British visitors spend more nights in Portugal than any other foreign visitors, and Americans are among the biggest groups too. Daily passes charge for each day you use the phone abroad, per phone.

kimsim Portugal Unlimited, 7 daysSee the 7-day price in the plan picker above3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; installed before you fly

For a family of four on Three, that's £77 for one week; on Verizon, $336. T-Mobile customers may need nothing extra, but 256 kbps after the first 5 GB is slow for maps and photos. Vodafone Portugal also sells a Portugal and Europe eSIM for €20, with unlimited data in Portugal for 15 days. Vivo's and TIM's roaming pages wouldn't load for us, so check those in your app.

If your SIM is from an EU country, it already roams like at home in Portugal, as long as you spend more time at home than abroad. Spanish, French and German visitors usually don't need us here.

Landing at Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal or Ponta Delgada

Switch the kimsim line on as the plane taxis to the gate and turn on Data Roaming for that line only. Then go through passport control, collect your bags and walk out through customs. With the line already working, you can walk past the SIM counters.

At the border. Since 12 October 2025, the EU's Entry/Exit System records non-EU visitors' fingerprints and a photo, and it has been fully in place since 10 April 2026. Portuguese officers may ask for an onward or return ticket and proof you have enough money for your visit. Save those to your phone before you fly. ETIAS isn't running yet, so don't pay any website that offers one.

Into town:

  • Lisbon (LIS): Aeroporto station, the end of the metro's red line, sits at the southern edge of Terminal 1 arrivals, and trains reach downtown in about 20 minutes. You can tap a contactless bank card on the gates, or buy a navegante occasional card for €0.50. A free shuttle links Terminal 2 to Terminal 1 every ten minutes, and the old Aerobus stopped in 2023.
  • Porto (OPO): metro line E runs from Aeroporto station into the city; change at Trindade for other lines.
  • Faro (FAO): buses 14 and 16 run daily to Faro's bus station, about 4 km away, where buses leave for the rest of the Algarve.
  • Funchal, Madeira (FNC): the airport is about 13 km from Funchal, and wind limits often disrupt flights there. Keep your airline's app working on mobile data in case your flight is held or rerouted.
  • Ponta Delgada, Azores (PDL): the airport on São Miguel is 2 km west of the city centre, and SATA Air Açores flies from there to Terceira, Pico, Faial (Horta), São Jorge, Santa Maria and Flores.

Networks and coverage

Portugal has four mobile networks. MEO is Altice Portugal's, and from 2025 the company has been dropping the Altice name for MEO. NOS and Vodafone are the other two long-standing networks. Digi is the newest: it bought the smaller operator Nowo in 2024 and started selling services on 4 November 2024.

This plan uses NOS and Vodafone, both with 5G, and your phone shows whichever it's on, not kimsim. Coverage is generally strong in Lisbon, Porto, the Algarve towns and along the main motorways. Expect gaps in the thinly populated interior, in mountain valleys and below the cliffs of the west coast. Download offline maps before you head inland or out on a trail.

The networks your plan uses are listed above.

Region by region

  • Lisbon and Sintra: the capital and its hills, with Sintra's palaces and the Cascais coast a short train ride out.
  • Porto and the Douro valley: Porto is the base for the wine quintas upriver. The valley's terraced slopes are steep, so expect weaker signal between villages.
  • The Algarve: beaches, resorts and boat trips to the sea caves around Benagil. The UK Foreign Office warns that falling rocks are a hazard on Algarve cliffs, and that a red beach flag means you must not enter the water. Save directions back to the car before you walk down to a cove.
  • Madeira: the levadas, old irrigation channels, run for more than 2,170 km and double as walking paths. Some routes, such as Caldeirão Verde, pass through tunnels where you need a torch, and you won't get signal inside. The Foreign Office calls hiking on Madeira and the Azores challenging, and suggests telling your hotel where you're going and taking a phone.
  • The Azores: nine islands, part of Portugal and one of the EU's outermost regions, like Madeira. This plan covers them as Portugal; we haven't tested signal on each island ourselves.
  • The Alentejo: wide, quiet farmland between Lisbon and the Algarve, with Évora as its main city. Download the day's route before long drives.
  • Next door: for Portugal and Spain on one eSIM, the Europe plan covers both. For Spain alone, see the Spain eSIM; for a trip across to Tangier, the Morocco eSIM.

Trains, roads and island hops

  • Trains: CP's Alfa Pendular is the fast tilting train linking Braga, Porto, Coimbra, Lisbon and Faro. Signal can drop in cuttings, so save your ticket in the CP app before you board.
  • Driving: you must carry photo ID when you drive. Set the sat-nav before you leave, and download offline maps for the interior.
  • Wildfires: the risk is higher from April to October, and roads can be closed at short notice. Call 112 if you see a fire.
  • Island hops: in the Azores, most people fly between islands. Keep boarding passes in your phone's wallet, not only in an app that needs a connection.

Apps worth having

  • Uber works in Lisbon, including airport pickups and a taxi option. Bolt covers Lisbon, Porto, Faro, the Algarve, Madeira and Ponta Delgada. Set accounts up at home, because sign-up can send a code by text to your usual number.
  • navegante is the official app for Lisbon's public transport passes. For single metro trips, a contactless bank card on the gate is simpler.
  • CP is the national rail operator's app for Alfa Pendular and other train tickets.
  • Google Maps: download offline areas for Madeira, the Azores and the Douro before you go. Lisbon's hills are steeper than they look, so check the walking route.
  • WhatsApp is how many holiday flats, boat-trip operators and guides message you. Keep your WhatsApp number working abroad.
  • Payments: contactless card payments work widely. Some banks send a text code to approve a new device, so keep your home line on for texts.

SIM and phone rules

A Portuguese SIM card means a trip to a shop: Vodafone Portugal, for example, sells its tourist eSIM online but its SIM card only in Vodafone stores. Carry your passport if you plan to buy one. We couldn't find the exact ID rule on an official Portuguese site, so ask in the shop. A physical SIM also takes your home SIM's place in a single-SIM phone.

A travel eSIM installed at home skips the counter. It's data only, so your home number stays in the phone for calls and texts.

Common mistakes

  • Crossing into Spain on a Portugal plan. Both countries are in the Schengen area, so there are no routine checks at the border, and near Valença, Elvas or the Guadiana your phone can pick a Spanish network early. How to choose a network by hand
  • Leaving Data Roaming on for your home line. If your SIM is from outside the EU, that's where daily charges start. Roaming goes on for the kimsim line only. Why roaming goes on for the kimsim line only
  • Starting the plan on a stop-over. If you connect through another country, keep the kimsim line off until you land in Portugal. If your plan started early
  • Buying a Portugal plan for a Spain and Portugal trip. Seville and Santiago de Compostela are an easy hop from Portugal, but they're in Spain. How regional plans work
  • No way to call for help. Portugal's emergency number is 112. A data-only eSIM can't dial it, so use your home line or any local phone.

How we put this page together

We checked carriers' roaming price pages, Vodafone Portugal's tourist eSIM page, Metro Lisboa's site, UK and EU government sites and the other sources noted above on 2–3 November 2026. Portugal's airport sites, T-Mobile's page and Vivo's and TIM's pages block automated checks, so airport details come from the airports' encyclopedia entries and T-Mobile's price from its search listing. We haven't measured speeds or coverage in Portugal ourselves, so coverage notes are general guidance, not a map. kimsim sells the eSIMs on this page.

Portugal eSIM: questions travellers ask

Does a Portugal eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?

Yes. Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal, so a Portugal plan covers them as Portugal; they're two of the EU's outermost regions, but they're Portuguese territory. You don't need a separate island plan. We haven't tested signal on each island ourselves, so download offline maps before a levada walk on Madeira or a crater-lake hike on São Miguel.

Will my Portugal eSIM work in Spain or Morocco?

No, a Portugal plan works in Portugal only. Spain and Portugal are both in the Schengen area with no routine border checks, so a day trip to Badajoz, Vigo or Ayamonte can switch your phone to a Spanish network without you noticing, and then data stops. For Portugal and Spain on one eSIM, the Europe plan shown above covers both; Morocco needs its own Morocco eSIM.

Do I need an eSIM for Portugal if I'm from the UK?

It depends on your plan. O2 includes Europe on most plans up to 25 GB, while Vodafone and Three charge £2.75 for each day you use your phone on many plans, and Vodafone's 8-day European Roaming pass is £16. Check your own plan before you go: if you'd pay a daily fee, a week of travel eSIM data often costs less, and every phone in the family pays its own fee.

Is Vodafone Portugal's tourist eSIM cheaper than a travel eSIM?

It can be for a short, Portugal-only trip: Vodafone's eSIM for Portugal is 15 euros for 10 GB over 7 days, data only, and it doesn't roam outside Portugal. Its Portugal and Europe eSIM is 20 euros for 15 days with unlimited data in Portugal. Compare the 7-day price in the plan picker above, and remember a kimsim plan can be installed at home and starts only when it first connects in Portugal.

Will my Brazilian phone plan work in Portugal?

Often, if you add a Europe pass. Claro's Passaporte Europa covers Portugal and is included on its Pós plan with 150 GB; on other plans it costs 19.99 reais a month per line on an annual contract. On Vivo or TIM, check your carrier's app for a Europe pack before you fly. Keep your Brazilian chip on for bank and Pix codes by text, with its data roaming off if you have no pass.

Which network does the Portugal eSIM use?

A kimsim Portugal eSIM can connect to NOS (5G), Vodafone (5G). Your phone picks one on its own once Data Roaming is on for the kimsim line. If signal drops, it can move to another network on the list.

Does the Portugal eSIM work on 5G?

Yes, on NOS and Vodafone, where there's 5G coverage and your phone supports 5G. Everywhere else it uses 4G, which is plenty for maps, messages, social media and video calls.

How much data do I need for a week in Portugal?

Many travellers use around 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. For a typical week, the 10 GB pack is a sensible start, and you can top up onto the same eSIM. If you stream or use hotspot every day, Unlimited suits you better.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Portugal?

Yes. kimsim Unlimited gives you 3 GB at full speed every day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of that day, which is fine for messages, maps and music but not HD video. Pick how many days you need; the allowance resets daily.

Can I use my Portugal eSIM in other countries?

An eSIM for Portugal works in Portugal only. For a trip that goes further, Europe (33 countries), Europe and Turkey (41 countries), Global (117 countries) cover Portugal and more countries on one eSIM. Check every country on your trip is on the plan's list before you buy.
