Why does an app think I'm in another country?

Some apps guess your country from your connection rather than your GPS, and now and then they guess wrong. Your data is working fine. Here's how to sort it.

Some apps (streaming services, shopping sites, Google's language choice) guess where you are from your mobile connection rather than from your phone's GPS. Now and then they guess wrong. Your connection is working fine; the app has simply picked the wrong country.

Tips

  • Maps and navigation use your phone's GPS, so they're unaffected.
  • Pick your language in the app itself, or in your Google account settings, instead of relying on the automatic choice.
  • For an app that insists, use Wi-Fi for that one task.
  • Using a VPN as well? That changes your apparent location again. VPNs.
