Networks and coverage in South Africa

Your eSIM can connect to Telkom (3G), MTN (5G), Cell C (4G), Vodacom (5G). Your phone uses whichever it finds. 5G where there's 5G coverage and your phone supports it. Otherwise 4G.

Real speed depends on the local network, how busy it is and your signal. Why 5G or 4G

How to set up your South Africa eSIM before you fly

  1. Check your phone. It needs eSIM and no carrier lock. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phone check
  2. Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Any time up to 180 days before. Your days don't start until it first connects in South Africa.
  3. When you land, switch the kimsim line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. You won't be charged roaming: kimsim is prepaid. Keep roaming off on your home line.
  4. Make kimsim your mobile data line. Your home number stays on for calls and texts.

Good to know: South Africa

South Africa is a country of long self-drive days, safari parks and big cities where a phone does most of the work, from the airport ride to the lodge's check-in message. A travel eSIM also skips RICA, the law that makes every South African SIM go through registration in a shop, with your passport and proof of where you're staying.

What a week of data costs in South Africa

Prices for 7 days of data, checked on 3 November 2026. South Africa isn't covered by European "roam like at home" deals, so home carriers charge extra here, per phone.

OptionPrice for 7 daysWhat you get
Three UK, Go Roam Around the World Extra 7-day pass£42Your UK allowance, up to 12 GB a month
Verizon TravelPass (US)$84 ($12 a day)5 GB at high speed a day

For a family of four on Verizon, that's $336 for one week. The German pass costs little but holds 1 GB, which a day of maps and photo uploads can use up.

Landing at Johannesburg (JNB), Cape Town (CPT) or Durban (DUR)

Most long-haul flights land at O.R. Tambo in Johannesburg or at Cape Town International. King Shaka in Durban serves KwaZulu-Natal and the coast. Switch the kimsim line on as the plane taxis in, so you can book a ride or message your driver while you queue at immigration.

Before you fly. British citizens can visit without a visa for up to 90 days. Your passport needs 2 blank pages and must be valid for at least 30 days after you leave. Since 1 July 2026, everyone entering or leaving must submit an online traveller declaration before travelling. Other nationalities should check the rules before booking.

In order: turn on Data Roaming for the kimsim line only, go through immigration, collect your bags and pass customs. O.R. Tambo's international terminal has "a number of mobile phone shops"; with your eSIM already working, you can walk past them.

From O.R. Tambo: the Gautrain station is linked to the departures level of the Central Terminal Building. Trains run daily from 05:15 to 22:00, about every 12 minutes. A single to Sandton was R228 in the 2025 fare guide. The Foreign Office says criminals have followed people from O.R. Tambo, and suggests a hotel or tour operator meets you where possible.

From Cape Town: MyCiTi bus route A01 runs between the airport and Civic Centre in the city centre. The airport lists Uber and Bolt as app-based options, and authorised airport taxis work from the transport kiosks.

From King Shaka: shuttle buses leave from outside International Arrivals, and taxi firms work from the arrivals terminal.

Flying on to Kruger: Skukuza Airport is inside Kruger National Park, with daily Airlink flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Kruger Mpumalanga International (MQP) is in Mbombela, about 43 km from the park's Numbi Gate. The Foreign Office says SANParks advises against using Numbi Gate after a fatal attack on a tourist, so check your route in.

Networks and coverage

South Africa's big mobile networks are Vodacom and MTN. Vodacom launched 5G in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town in 2020, and MTN switched on its public 5G network on 30 June 2020. Cell C now runs largely on Vodacom's and MTN's networks. Telkom runs Telkom Mobile, which started out as 8ta. rain is a data-only network that launched Africa's first commercial 5G in 2019. Your phone shows the South African operator's name, not kimsim. The networks your plan uses are listed above.

Power cuts. South Africa hasn't had scheduled load shedding since 16 May 2025. The Foreign Office says planned cuts have fallen sharply but can still happen, and can affect mobile networks and Wi-Fi. In past rounds, coverage dropped where mast batteries ran flat or were stolen.

Coverage is generally good in the cities, the Garden Route towns and along the main highways. Expect it to thin out in the game parks, on mountain passes and on the long empty roads of the Karoo.

Region by region

  • Cape Town and Table Mountain: well covered in the city, the V&A Waterfront and the Atlantic seaboard. On the mountain's hiking routes and at Cape Point it can come and go, so download a trail map first.
  • The Winelands: Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl are usually fine. Some farms sit in valleys with weaker signal; save your tasting bookings offline.
  • The Garden Route: good in Mossel Bay, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay. Forest and mountain stretches between towns are patchier.
  • Kruger and the safari lodges: expect patchy signal away from the main rest camps and gates. Many lodges offer Wi-Fi, but it's often limited, so ask yours before you rely on it.
  • The Drakensberg: valleys and high trails have long gaps. Plan to be offline on hikes.
  • Johannesburg and Pretoria: dense and well covered, including Sandton and the Gautrain stations.
  • Durban and the coast: good in the city, Umhlanga and Ballito.
  • Day trips over the border: Eswatini, Lesotho and Botswana are close to many routes. Your South Africa plan stops at the border, so plan your stops before you cross. The Global plan covers Eswatini and Botswana too; Lesotho needs a Lesotho eSIM.

This is general guidance, not a coverage map. If one network is weak where you're staying, switch network by hand.

Flights, self-drive and trains

Most visitors self-drive between regions or take domestic flights between Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and the Kruger airports. The Foreign Office warns that carjacking and "smash and grab" thefts are common, particularly after dark and around traffic lights and junctions. Keep your phone out of sight in the car and set the route before you pull away. In Gauteng, the Gautrain links the airport, Sandton and Pretoria. Download an offline map for any long drive.

Apps worth having

  • Uber works in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. Bolt works in Johannesburg and Cape Town, including airport rides. Set both up at home: sign-up can send a text code to your usual number. The Foreign Office warns that minibus taxis drive erratically and that fake app drivers wait at airports.
  • WhatsApp is how lodges, guides and drivers usually message you. Log in before you leave, and keep your WhatsApp number working abroad.
  • Maps: download offline areas for Kruger, the Garden Route and the Drakensberg.
  • Payments: cards are widely accepted in cities. Carry some rand for tips, car guards and small stalls.

SIM and phone rules

RICA is about South African SIMs. The Regulation of Interception of Communications Act says a South African network may not activate a SIM until it has recorded the owner's details. For visitors, that means full names, passport number, an address and the country that issued the passport. In practice you register in person at a customer care centre with your passport and a letter from your hotel, and activation can take up to 24 hours.

Roaming visitors are exempt. Section 40(1)(b) says the rule doesn't apply to customers of a mobile provider outside South Africa who use a South African network while there. A travel eSIM is exactly that: a foreign line roaming as a visitor. The government is reviewing how the rules handle eSIMs, but nothing has changed for visitors so far.

Common mistakes

  • Planning to buy a SIM on arrival after a long flight. RICA means a shop queue, your passport, an accommodation letter and up to a day's wait. Install on Wi-Fi before you fly.
  • Leaving Data Roaming on for your home line. South Africa is outside European roaming deals, so daily charges start here. Why roaming goes on for the kimsim line only
  • Starting the plan on a stop-over. If you connect through the Gulf or Europe, keep the kimsim line off until you land in South Africa. If your plan started early
  • Crossing into Lesotho or Zimbabwe on a South Africa plan. It stops working at the border. How regional plans work
  • No way to call for help. From a mobile, 112 reaches all emergency services, and the police are on 10111. A data-only eSIM can't dial them, so keep your home line on or use a local phone.

How we put this page together

We checked the RICA Act, operators' own pages, airport and transport operators' sites, carriers' roaming price pages, the UK Foreign Office and the other sources noted above on 3 November 2026, and we'll keep them up to date. We haven't measured speeds or coverage in South Africa ourselves, so coverage notes are general guidance, not a map. kimsim sells the eSIMs on this page.

South Africa eSIM: questions travellers ask

Do I need to RICA a travel eSIM in South Africa?

No. RICA makes South African networks register every local SIM before it's switched on, but section 40(1)(b) of the Act exempts customers of foreign mobile providers who roam on a South African network. A travel eSIM is a foreign line roaming as a visitor, so there's no registration and no counter visit. You only RICA if you buy a South African SIM, with your passport and proof of where you're staying.

Is a South African tourist SIM cheaper than an eSIM for a week?

The data itself is cheap: Vodacom's prepaid weekly bundle is R49 for 5 GB, plus 5 GB of night-time data, for 7 days. But you buy the SIM in a shop, register it under RICA with your passport and an accommodation letter, and activation can take up to 24 hours. A travel eSIM installed at home works as soon as you land, and your home number stays in the phone.

Will load shedding affect my phone signal in South Africa?

Probably not on a trip now. South Africa hasn't had scheduled load shedding since 16 May 2025, but the UK Foreign Office says power cuts can still happen and can affect mobile networks and Wi-Fi. In past rounds, masts went quiet when their backup batteries ran flat or were stolen. Carry a charged power bank, especially on self-drive days.

Will my South Africa eSIM work in Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho or Zimbabwe?

No. A South Africa plan works in South Africa only, and near the borders your phone can also pick up a neighbouring network. The Global plan shown above covers South Africa, Botswana and Eswatini on one eSIM. It doesn't cover Lesotho, Zimbabwe or Mozambique, so add a separate eSIM for those.

Is it safe to use Uber or Bolt from Johannesburg or Cape Town airport?

Uber runs in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, and Bolt in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Many visitors use them in place of street taxis. The UK Foreign Office warns that scammers target e-hailing users and that unregulated drivers pose as app drivers, especially at airports. Only get into the car the app shows, with the matching number plate and driver, and book while you're still inside the terminal.

Which network does the South Africa eSIM use?

A kimsim South Africa eSIM can connect to Telkom (3G), MTN (5G), Cell C (4G), Vodacom (5G). Your phone picks one on its own once Data Roaming is on for the kimsim line. If signal drops, it can move to another network on the list.

Does the South Africa eSIM work on 5G?

Yes, on MTN and Vodacom, where there's 5G coverage and your phone supports 5G. Everywhere else it uses 4G, which is plenty for maps, messages, social media and video calls.

How much data do I need for a week in South Africa?

Many travellers use around 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. For a typical week, the 10 GB pack is a sensible start, and you can top up onto the same eSIM. If you stream or use hotspot every day, Unlimited suits you better.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for South Africa?

Yes. kimsim Unlimited gives you 3 GB at full speed every day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of that day, which is fine for messages, maps and music but not HD video. Pick how many days you need; the allowance resets daily.

Can I use my South Africa eSIM in other countries?

An eSIM for South Africa works in South Africa only. For a trip that goes further, Global (117 countries) cover South Africa and more countries on one eSIM. Check every country on your trip is on the plan's list before you buy.
