Which Sri Lanka plan do I need?

Rough guide only: many travellers use 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. Video, video calls and hotspot use much more.

Networks and coverage in Sri Lanka

Your eSIM connects to Hutch (4G). 4G. That's plenty for maps, messages, social media and video calls.

Real speed depends on the local network, how busy it is and your signal. Why 5G or 4G

How to set up your Sri Lanka eSIM before you fly

  1. Check your phone. It needs eSIM and no carrier lock. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phone check
  2. Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Any time up to 180 days before. Your days don't start until it first connects in Sri Lanka.
  3. When you land, switch the kimsim line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. You won't be charged roaming: kimsim is prepaid. Keep roaming off on your home line.
  4. Make kimsim your mobile data line. Your home number stays on for calls and texts.

Step by step: iPhone · Android · Samsung · Pixel

Stuck? Don't delete it. Restart your phone first.

Good to know: Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka goes from palm-lined beaches to 1,900-metre tea country in a single train ride, and your signal changes with the scenery. Get your free ETA from the official portal before you fly, and install your eSIM at the same time, so you're online before you reach the SIM queue at Katunayake.

What a week of data costs in Sri Lanka

Prices for 7 days of data, checked on 3 November 2026. Sri Lanka isn't covered by European "roam like at home" rules, so most home plans charge for each day you use the phone there, per phone.

OptionPrice for 7 daysWhat you get
Vodafone UK, pay monthly, no roaming included£56 (£8 a day)Your usual allowance. Sri Lanka is in Zone D
Verizon TravelPass (US)$84 ($12 a day)5 GB at high speed a day

kimsim Sri Lanka Unlimited, 7 daysSee the 7-day price in the plan picker above3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; installed before you fly

For a family of four on Verizon, that's $336 for one week. The German pack is cheap but small: 2 GB goes quickly on maps, photos and video calls home. Travelling from India? Airtel and Jio sell Sri Lanka roaming packs, but their sites only show prices for your own number, so compare in your carrier's app before you go.

Landing at Bandaranaike International (CMB)

Almost every international flight lands at Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake, near Negombo, about 32 km north of Colombo. Switch the kimsim line on as the plane taxis in, so your "landed" message to the driver goes out before immigration.

ETA first. Every foreign visitor needs an Electronic Travel Authorization before arrival. Since 25 May 2026, it's free for 30 days, with double entry, for nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, the US, India, Australia, Germany and China. Apply only on the official portal, eta.gov.lk, and make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after you arrive.

Through the terminal, in order: hand your Disembarkation Card in at immigration, walk through the duty-free hall to baggage claim, then go through customs into the arrival lobby. Turn Data Roaming on for the kimsim line while you wait for your bags.

SIM counters: two operators' outlets sell mobile connections in the arrival lobby, next to the banks and ATMs. Dialog has two stores right after the customs desk and checks your passport before activating a SIM. With your eSIM already working, you can skip them.

Into Colombo: the airport lists shuttle, bus, train and taxi services. Uber takes airport rides and lets you book up to 30 days ahead. Most guesthouses and drivers arrange pick-ups over WhatsApp, so save their number before you fly.

Networks and coverage

Sri Lanka has three mobile operators. Dialog is the biggest, with about two-thirds of the market. SLTMobitel is second, with 7.1 million subscribers in 2024. Hutch is third, with about 4 million.

Two mergers explain the old names you'll still see on signs. Hutch took over Etisalat Lanka in 2018, and Dialog bought all of Airtel Lanka in June 2024. Your phone shows the Sri Lankan network's name, not kimsim.

5G is new here. The 5G spectrum auction was held in December 2025, and Dialog passed 1,000 5G sites by April 2026. For most of the island, 4G is the network you'll use. Hutch reported coverage of about 90% of the island back in 2018. Expect it to thin out in national parks, deep hill-country valleys and out at sea. The networks your plan uses are listed above.

Region by region

  • Colombo and Negombo: generally the best signal on the island. Good for setting up apps and maps on your first night.
  • Kandy: busy and well covered. Signal can dip in the hills above the lake.
  • Sigiriya and Dambulla (the Cultural Triangle): fine in towns. On the rock and inside the cave temples, signal can be weaker. Download the area map before you leave Kandy.
  • Ella and the hill country: expect gaps on winding roads and in tea-estate valleys. Guesthouses in Ella usually have Wi-Fi for uploads.
  • Yala and Udawalawe: treat a jeep safari as offline. Signal comes and goes inside the parks, so agree a meeting point with your driver first.
  • South coast (Galle, Mirissa, Weligama): generally good in town. On a whale-watching boat, signal fades as you head offshore.
  • East coast (Arugam Bay, Trincomalee): fine in town, thinner between them. Download maps before the long drive across.
  • Jaffna and the north: a long way from Colombo, with quiet stretches on the road up. Save your hotel details offline before you set off.

Getting around

The train is the famous way up into the hill country. Reserved seats can be booked online on Sri Lanka Railways' advance reservation site. The Main Line passes through dozens of tunnels, so expect short drop-outs. Stay inside the carriage while it moves: the UK Foreign Office reports fatal accidents from people hanging out of doorways.

Many visitors hire a car with a driver for the Cultural Triangle and the south. Tuk-tuks are everywhere: agree the price first or pick one with a working meter. Want to drive yourself? Tourists can get a temporary driving licence at the airport on landing.

Apps worth having

  • PickMe is the local ride-hailing app, strongest in the Western Province around Colombo. Book a tuk, a small car or a van, and pay cash or by card.
  • Uber runs 24/7 in Colombo, with cars, autos and bikes. Outside tourist areas there are fewer cars on the apps. Set up both apps at home, because sign-up can send a code by text to your usual number.
  • WhatsApp is how drivers, guesthouses and safari jeeps reach you. Log in before you leave, and keep WhatsApp and iMessage on your number.
  • Google Maps offline: download Colombo, Kandy, the hill country and the south coast before you fly.
  • Cash: carry some rupees for tuk-tuks, tea stalls and park fees. The airport has ATMs and exchange counters in the arrival lobby.

SIM and phone rules

A Sri Lankan SIM needs your passport. Dialog verifies your passport before it activates a tourist SIM or tourist eSIM, at the airport or any service centre, and the plan only starts once you top up its exact value. Sri Lankan SIMs also need a free SIM slot, so a single-SIM phone loses your home number while it's in.

A travel eSIM skips all of that. It roams as a visitor on a Sri Lankan network, so there's no shop visit and nothing to register. Carry your passport anyway: the UK Foreign Office says visitors must always carry it as ID.

Common mistakes

  • Using a look-alike ETA site. Only eta.gov.lk is official, and for 40 nationalities it's free. Do it on Wi-Fi at home, then install your eSIM on Wi-Fi before you fly.
  • Leaving Data Roaming on for your home line. At up to £8 a day, it adds up over a two-week loop. Why roaming goes on for the kimsim line only
  • Starting the plan on a stop-over. Flying via Dubai, Doha or Singapore? Keep the kimsim line off until you land in Colombo. If your plan started early
  • Assuming the Maldives is included. No regional plan covers it right now, so get a separate Maldives eSIM for that leg.
  • Deleting the eSIM when signal drops in the hills. It comes back after the tunnel. What to do if there's no signal
  • No way to call for help. Police are 118 or 119, and an ambulance is 1990. A data-only eSIM can't dial them, so use your home line or any local phone.

How we put this page together

We checked Sri Lanka's official ETA portal, the airport's own passenger guide, the operators' and carriers' own price pages, the UK Foreign Office advice and the other sources noted above on 1–3 November 2026, and we'll keep them up to date. We haven't measured speeds or coverage in Sri Lanka ourselves, so coverage notes are general guidance, not a map. kimsim sells the eSIMs on this page.

Sri Lanka eSIM: questions travellers ask

Can I buy a tourist SIM at Colombo airport?

Yes. Bandaranaike airport has two operators' outlets in the arrival lobby, and Dialog runs two stores right after the customs desk. Dialog's Tourists Plan starts at Rs 1,399 for 20 GB over 30 days, and staff check your passport before they activate it. With a travel eSIM installed at home, you can walk straight past the queue and out to your driver.

Do I need my passport to get a SIM card in Sri Lanka?

Yes, for a Sri Lankan SIM or eSIM. Dialog asks you to show your passport for verification at its airport store or any service centre, even if you ordered the tourist eSIM online first. A travel eSIM bought before you fly is a foreign line roaming as a visitor, so there's no shop visit and nothing to register.

Is the Sri Lanka ETA free, and where do I apply?

Since 25 May 2026, the tourist ETA is free for 30 days for nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, the US, India, Australia, Germany and China. Every foreign visitor still needs an ETA before arrival. Apply only on the official portal, eta.gov.lk, and keep the approval saved on your phone, because look-alike agent sites charge for the same form.

Is there one eSIM for Sri Lanka and the Maldives?

Not right now: none of our regional plans covers the Maldives. The Asia Pacific plan shown above covers Sri Lanka and India on one eSIM. For a Maldives leg, buy a separate Maldives eSIM and install both at home, then switch lines when you land in Malé.

Is there mobile signal on the Kandy to Ella train?

For much of the ride, but not all of it. The Main Line climbs into tea country through dozens of tunnels and deep cuttings, topping out at 1,898 metres at Pattipola, so expect short drop-outs. Download offline maps and your onward booking before you board, and keep big uploads for guesthouse Wi-Fi in Ella.

Which network does the Sri Lanka eSIM use?

A kimsim Sri Lanka eSIM connects to Hutch (4G). It does this on its own once Data Roaming is on for the kimsim line, so there's nothing to choose.

Does the Sri Lanka eSIM work on 5G?

Not at the moment: these plans run on 4G (Hutch (4G)). That's plenty for maps, messages, social media and video calls. Real speed depends on the network, how busy it is and your signal.

How much data do I need for a week in Sri Lanka?

Many travellers use around 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. For a typical week, the 10 GB pack is a sensible start, and you can top up onto the same eSIM. If you stream or use hotspot every day, Unlimited suits you better.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Sri Lanka?

Yes. kimsim Unlimited gives you 3 GB at full speed every day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of that day, which is fine for messages, maps and music but not HD video. Pick how many days you need; the allowance resets daily.

Can I use my Sri Lanka eSIM in other countries?

An eSIM for Sri Lanka works in Sri Lanka only. For a trip that goes further, Global (117 countries), Asia Pacific (20 countries) cover Sri Lanka and more countries on one eSIM. Check every country on your trip is on the plan's list before you buy.
