Which Southeast Asia plan do I need?

Rough guide only: many travellers use 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. Video, video calls and hotspot use much more.

  • Maps, messages, a few photos
  • Plus social media and the odd video call
  • Streaming, video calls, hotspot every day

Networks and coverage in Southeast Asia

One eSIM, local networks in 8 countries:

  • 🇲🇾 Malaysia Maxis (5G), CelcomDigi (5G)
  • 🇮🇩 Indonesia Indosat (5G), Telkomsel (5G), XL (4G)
  • 🇰🇭 Cambodia Metfone (4G), Cellcard (4G)
  • 🇻🇳 Vietnam Viettel Mobile (5G), VinaPhone (5G), MobiFone (5G)
  • 🇵🇭 Philippines Smart (5G), Globe (5G)
  • 🇹🇭 Thailand DTAC (5G), AIS (5G), TrueMove H (5G)
  • 🇱🇦 Laos Lao Telecom (5G)
  • 🇹🇱 Timor-Leste Telemor (4G)

Real speed depends on the local network, how busy it is and your signal. Why 5G or 4G

How to set up your Southeast Asia eSIM before you fly

  1. Check your phone. It needs eSIM and no carrier lock. Dial *#06#: if you see an EID, it supports eSIM. Phone check
  2. Install at home, on Wi-Fi. Any time up to 180 days before. Your days start when it first connects in any of its countries.
  3. When you land, switch the kimsim line on and turn on Data Roaming for it. You won't be charged roaming: kimsim is prepaid. Keep roaming off on your home line.
  4. Make kimsim your mobile data line. Your home number stays on for calls and texts.

Good to know: Southeast Asia

Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia on one eSIM, plus Malaysia, Indonesia including Bali, the Philippines and Timor-Leste. It's built for the backpacker loop and the islands after it, but it doesn't cover Singapore, so a stop there needs its own plan.

What a four-week backpacking route costs

A classic 28-day loop: a week each in Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia. Prices checked on 2–3 November 2026. Home-carrier passes charge for each day you use the phone abroad, per phone.

OptionPrice for 28 daysWhat you get
Three UK, daily roaming charge£168 (£8 a day for 21 days), plus LaosUp to 12 GB of your UK allowance in Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia; Laos isn't on any Go Roam list
Verizon TravelPass (US)$336 ($12 a day)5 GB a day at high speed, then slower; all four countries included
Telstra International Day Pass (Australia)A$210 (A$10 a day for 21 days), plus Laos2 GB a day; Laos isn't a Day Pass destination
Four local SIMs, bought as you go฿499 + 85,000 kip + 150,000 dong + 5 US dollarsTrue-dtac Tourist Infinite (8 days), Lao Telecom tourist SIM (10 GB, 7 days), Viettel 5G150T (plus the SIM), Smart Traveller (15 days); a counter and a passport check in each country
kimsim Southeast Asia Unlimited, 30 daysSee the 30-day price in the plan picker above3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps; one eSIM in all 8 countries; installed before you fly

For a couple on Verizon, that's $672 for the month. The local SIMs cost far less, but that's four queues, four passport checks and four new numbers, and in a single-SIM phone your home number is out of the phone the whole trip.

Landing in Bangkok, Vientiane, Bali and the other hubs

Switch the kimsim line on as the plane taxis to the gate, with Data Roaming on for that line only.

  • Vientiane (VTE) and Luang Prabang (LPQ): Lao Telecom sells its tourist SIM at Wattay airport and at the Friendship Bridge.
  • Singapore (SIN): not on this plan. A layover at Changi won't connect or start your days.

Networks and coverage

This plan uses two or three networks in most countries: AIS, dtac and TrueMove H in Thailand, Viettel, VinaPhone and MobiFone in Vietnam, Telkomsel, Indosat and XL in Indonesia. Laos and Timor-Leste get one each, Lao Telecom and Telemor. Your phone shows the local operator's name, not kimsim, and moves to the next country's networks on its own.

Some names surprise people. dtac and TrueMove H have belonged to one company since 2023. Celcom and Digi merged as CelcomDigi in 2022. Cambodia's Metfone is part of Vietnam's Viettel group.

5G is listed in six of the eight countries; Cambodia and Timor-Leste are 4G on this plan. Viettel launched 5G in all of Vietnam's provinces in October 2024. Lao Telecom launched at 28 sites in Vientiane in January 2024. The UK Foreign Office warns that cross-country journeys in Laos can have limited mobile coverage.

The networks your plan uses are listed above.

Country by country, and which plan

  • Thailand: Bangkok, Chiang Mai and the islands. For Thailand alone, there's a Thailand eSIM.
  • Laos: Vientiane, Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang on Lao Telecom. Laos is the stop the Asia Pacific plan leaves out. For Laos alone, there's a Laos eSIM.
  • Vietnam and Cambodia: both covered, so the Bavet crossing needs nothing new. See the Vietnam eSIM and Cambodia eSIM for single-country trips.
  • Bali and the islands: Indonesia and the Philippines are in. On Nyepi, Bali's mobile data is switched off for 24 hours.
  • Timor-Leste: Telemor, 4G. Of our Asia regional plans, only this one covers it.
  • Not covered: Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, Hong Kong, Japan, China and Australia. For Singapore, add a Singapore eSIM or pick Asia Pacific. For Japan, Korea or Taiwan too, pick Asia. How regional plans work

Borders, trains and boats

  • Thailand to Cambodia: the UK Foreign Office says land crossings remain suspended and advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the border. Fly instead.
  • Thailand to Laos: five Friendship Bridges cross the Mekong, the first between Nong Khai and Vientiane. A shuttle bus runs across it between the border posts.
  • Through Laos by train: the railway runs Vientiane, Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang, then Boten on the Chinese border, about two hours from Vientiane to Luang Prabang by fast train. Its LCR Ticket app launched for domestic passengers only, so plan to buy at a station. China is not on this plan.
  • Cambodia to Vietnam: Bavet faces Moc Bai on the road to Ho Chi Minh City.
  • Malaysia to Thailand: ETS trains run from KL Sentral to Padang Besar. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel on the Hat Yai to Padang Besar line.
  • Boats: Mekong boats can be dangerous, and safety standards vary. The Philippine ferry network has a poor safety record. Signal drops mid-crossing, so save tickets offline.

Apps worth having

  • Grab works in six of these countries: Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines. It isn't in Laos or Timor-Leste.
  • LOCA is Laos's own ride-hailing app, based in Vientiane.
  • Zalo is Vietnam's main messaging app, used by homestays and drivers. WhatsApp covers most of the rest. Keep your WhatsApp number working abroad
  • Bakong Tourists, the National Bank of Cambodia's wallet, pays at KHQR codes.
  • Sign up at home: most of these send a text code to your usual number.

SIM rules, country by country

  • Thailand: in-person registration with a passport since May 2026.
  • Laos: every SIM has been registered with a passport or ID since 2020.
  • Vietnam: a face scan to verify numbers since 2026.
  • Cambodia: original passport and a face scan.
  • Malaysia: biometric passport checks, two SIMs per operator.
  • Philippines: every SIM is registered.
  • Indonesia: a local SIM registers your phone's IMEI; roaming phones are exempt.

A kimsim eSIM is a foreign line roaming as a visitor, so none of these counters apply. It's data only, and your home number stays in the phone. Calls and texts on a data-only eSIM

Common mistakes

  • Planning the Bangkok to Siem Reap bus. The land border is shut for now, so book a flight.
  • Assuming Singapore is in. It isn't one of the plan's eight countries. How regional plans work
  • Starting the plan on a layover. Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur are on this plan, so a change of planes with the line on starts your days. If your plan started early
  • Losing data at a border. Near the Lao, Thai or Vietnamese borders, your phone can grab a network that isn't on this plan. Choose a network by hand
  • No way to call for help. Numbers differ: 1191 for police in Laos, 117 in Cambodia, 113 in Vietnam. A data-only eSIM can't dial them, so use your home line or any local phone.

How we put this page together

We checked carriers' roaming price pages, operators' tourist SIM pages, immigration sites, the UK Foreign Office and the other sources noted above on 1–3 November 2026, many of them first gathered for our single-country pages. The country list, networks and data allowance come from the plan itself. We haven't measured speeds or coverage ourselves, so coverage notes are general guidance, not a map. kimsim sells the eSIMs on this page.

Southeast Asia eSIM: questions travellers ask

Can I use one eSIM for Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia?

Yes. All four are on the Southeast Asia plan, with Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and Timor-Leste, and the eSIM moves to each country's networks as you cross. Your days start when it first connects in any of them. One thing has changed on the classic loop: the UK Foreign Office says land crossings between Thailand and Cambodia remain suspended, so most people now fly that leg or go round through Laos.

Does the Southeast Asia eSIM work in Singapore?

No. Singapore itself isn't on this plan, so the eSIM won't connect to Singapore's networks. A change of planes at Changi just means no data until you fly on, and it won't start your days. If you're staying, add a Singapore eSIM or pick the Asia Pacific plan, which covers Singapore but not Laos or Timor-Leste.

Does the Southeast Asia eSIM work in Bali?

Yes. Bali is in Indonesia, which is on this plan on Telkomsel, Indosat and XL, so a Thailand and Bali trip runs on one eSIM, as do Lombok and the Gilis. On Nyepi, Bali's Day of Silence, mobile data across the island is switched off for 24 hours, so nothing connects that day.

Which network does the Southeast Asia eSIM use in Laos: Unitel or Lao Telecom?

Lao Telecom. It's the only Lao network on this plan, so your phone joins it on its own and there's nothing to choose. Unitel isn't one of the networks this plan uses. Lao Telecom launched its full 5G service at 28 sites in Vientiane in January 2024; outside the cities, expect 4G and gaps on long road journeys.

Should I pick the Southeast Asia, Asia or Asia Pacific eSIM?

Pick Southeast Asia if your trip stays in this region, or if you need Timor-Leste. Pick Asia if you're adding Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong or India: it covers the same seven Southeast Asian countries apart from Timor-Leste, with the same Unlimited allowance. Pick Asia Pacific for Singapore, China, Australia or New Zealand, but it leaves out Laos and is sold as data packs only.

Which network does the Southeast Asia eSIM use?

Each country uses its own local networks, listed on this page under every country. Your phone switches at the border on its own, with no new eSIM to install.

How much data do I need for a week in Southeast Asia?

Many travellers use around 3 to 7 GB a week for maps, messages and some social media. For a typical week, the 10 GB pack is a sensible start, and you can top up onto the same eSIM. If you stream or use hotspot every day, Unlimited suits you better.

Is there an unlimited data eSIM for Southeast Asia?

Yes. kimsim Unlimited gives you 3 GB at full speed every day, then 1 Mbps for the rest of that day, which is fine for messages, maps and music but not HD video. Pick how many days you need; the allowance resets daily.

Which countries does the Southeast Asia eSIM cover?

It covers 8 countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia. The full list is on this page. A country that isn't on the list won't work, even if it's next door.

Do I need a new eSIM when I cross a border?

No, as long as every country is on this plan's list. The same eSIM switches to local networks as you cross. Your plan's days start when it first connects in any covered country, which may be earlier than you expect on a stop-over.
